Sedation Dentistry

What is sedation dentistry?

sedation dentistry

Sedation dentistry is an approach to dental care that incorporates medication to help you relax during treatment. Dental anxiety is a leading cause of delaying or avoiding dental visits. That approach may reduce the anxiety of thinking about, scheduling, or attending an appointment, but it can also lead to serious dental health problems.

Some reasons to consider sedation dentistry include:

  • Reduced physical discomfort
  • Less anxiety
  • Help to overcome a gag reflex or extreme teeth or gum sensitivity
  • Ability to withstand long or complex dental procedures

Sedation dentistry can improve your experience in the dental chair, which may even reduce the need for sedation during future visits.

What are the types of sedation dentistry?

You have options at Pro Dental Care when it comes to the type of sedation used during your visits. There are several available options and pros and cons associated with each. Your practitioner will discuss your choices and give you the details you need to make an informed decision about how to proceed.

Local anesthesia

This option is used for virtually all procedures that involve a risk of discomfort. Medication is injected into the soft tissue near the area where the work will be done and interrupts the transmission of pain signals between your body and brain. Local anesthesia doesn’t make you sleepy but numbs the tissue in the treatment area.

Inhaled minimal sedation

This approach uses laughing gas you breathe in through a mask placed over your nose. The amount of gas is adjusted to help you relax, but you’ll remain awake and able to communicate with your dentist throughout the procedure.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation uses prescription medication taken orally before the procedure to produce a drowsy, relaxed effect. You won’t be asleep throughout the procedure, but you may drift off from time to time.

IV sedation

IV sedation delivers the greatest degree of relaxation during a complex dental procedure. The medication is administered directly into your vein and can be adjusted during the procedure to achieve the proper level of sedation. You may not be completely unconscious, but you are unlikely to have full awareness of the steps involved in your dental procedure.

Your Pro Dental Care dentist will advise you on the best sedation option to meet your level of anxiety and your dental needs. Scheduling is as easy as a phone call or a visit to the online scheduling tool.  Pro Dental Care has two dental offices – Sleepy Hollow and South Elgin – for your convenience.
