I remember root canals back in the day: the technique was not so advanced and they were all done by hand filing and the materials we used were primitive. Now, because of the rotary instruments, now this technology has improved so much, it has expedited the process. It is expedited because we can now do root canals in just one visit. Previously, it used to take a dentist two or three different visits to do a root canal. It can be all done in one visit by using the highly sophisticated instrumentation we have, using the rotary instruments and making the procedure completely painless because of the numbing technique we use. I have patients who sleep through the procedure of a root canal and they tell me, “I can't believe it. People told me that this was going to be very, very painful, and it's not.”
While root canals have earned a scary reputation over the years, there’s really no reason to be frightened – not when the procedure is performed by an experienced dentist like Dr. Rick Brar or Dr. Keith Bram, both of whom have been practicing dentistry for more than 25 years. And root canals are quicker and easier than they used to be, thanks to the modern rotary instruments our South Elgin, IL dentists use.
Getting a root canal procedure will:
- Save your damaged tooth by removing infected material
- Prevent infection from spreading
- Get you out of pain
- Prevent a painful abscess from forming
- Keep your bone structure intact

Technology & Sedation Make Root Canals Easy
In addition to the rotary tools our dentists use to make your root canal procedure quicker and easier, they also plan your procedure using 3D images that show your teeth, soft tissue, nerves, and underlying bone structure in a single scan. This makes it easy for them to see any possible complications before your root canal even begins!
They’ll thoroughly numb your mouth before your procedure begins, but you can also receive dental sedation if you’d like. You can choose from three types of sedation, all of which offer varying levels of relaxation:
- Nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” will take the edge off, and you’ll even be able to drive yourself home afterward.
- You can take an oral sedative so you arrive relaxed and remain that way throughout your root canal.
- IV sedation will put you in a sleep-like state, and you may not remember much about the procedure when you awaken.
