When teeth are lost, not only is one’s appearance damaged, but also the ability to eat and speak properly. Replacing missing teeth will give you back your smile and facial structure, and allow you to chew and speak more comfortably.
Dentures are custom-made replacements for teeth that have been lost. Traditional dentures can be removed and reinserted, and while they take some getting used to, today's dentures are more natural-looking and comfortable than ever before.
Dentures that are used for replacing a full arch of teeth are called full dentures. When used for top teeth, these dentures include a gum-colored base that covers the gums and the roof of the mouth, allowing the false teeth to sit firmly. Full dentures for the lower arch are similar, but the base is shaped like a horseshoe, so it does not cover the tongue. When fitting full dentures, any remaining teeth must be removed.
Once you have your dentures, it’s important to care for them properly. Don't let them dry out – they should always be placed in a denture cleanser soaking solution or water when you're not wearing them. Brush your dentures regularly to remove food and dental plaque, and help prevent staining. Also be sure to brush your gums, tongue and palate every morning. If your dentures break, chip, crack or become loose, contact your dentist immediately.
