A root canal treatment is necessary when the soft tissue, known as the pulp, inside the root canal of a tooth becomes infected. Pulp infections can be caused by a chip or a crack in the tooth, serious decay, repeated dental procedures, or from an injury. Left untreated, it will become extremely painful and can lead to an abscess and tooth loss. Symptoms of a root canal infection include:
- Sensitivity to temperature
- Pain when chewing
- Swelling of the gum around the tooth
- Pus oozing from the affected tooth
- Swelling of the face
- Tooth darkening
During a root canal treatment, we will remove the infected pulp. Once the damaged pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth can be cleaned, shaped and filled. While root canal treatment has a reputation for being painful, the truth is that the infection is painful, and this treatment will relieve the pain.
During a root canal procedure, you will receive local anesthesia to ensure the area is numb. Ask us about sedation options as well! An opening is made in the top of the tooth. Dental tools will be used to clean out the pulp from the pulp chamber and the root canals. This area will then be shaped for filling. The root canals will be filled with a biocompatible material. For protection, the tooth will be covered with a dental crown.
