While it is always our goal to help your teeth last a lifetime, there are several reasons a tooth extraction might be necessary. This may be due to infection or damage that is beyond repair, teeth overcrowding, or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.
What to Expect With Tooth Extraction
Before the extraction, you will receive appropriate anesthesia for your specific needs. This will prevent pain during the procedure. If your tooth is impacted, we will need to cut away gum and bone tissue first. Using a special dental tool, the dentist will grasp the tooth and rock it back and forth to loosen it. Sometimes, a tooth must be removed in pieces. Once a tooth is removed, a blood clot will form in its place. We will pack the socket with gauze and have you bite down to help stop bleeding. If necessary, the dentist will place a few stitches.
After the procedure, be sure to follow your dentist’s recommendations. Most patients will recover after just a couple of days. In the meantime, an ice pack can be applied to the outer cheek for about ten minutes at a time to reduce swelling. After 24 hours, gently rinsing with warm salt water can help to the area clean.
